Discus Fish

Discus are a tropical fresh-water fish that originate from the Amazon River. They are a type of Cichlid and their scientific name is Symphysodon. They have become popular as home aquarium fish due to their unique round shape and distinct colours. They are difficult to keep in an aquarium and are quite high maintenance. Regular water changes and chemical stability of the water an absolute must. However they are well worth the effort.

Discus thrive in water that is soft, chlorine and chloramine free, PH of about 6.5 and a constant temperature of 29 - 30 deg Celsius. It is also very important to keep a constant PH level as any significant fluctuations can harm the fish.

It is also very important to keep the ammonia and nitrite level right down. This can be achieved by having an efficient filtration system along with changing 30 - 40% of the water at least once per week.
